Egypt join teams qualified for Rio Olympics

Lausanne, Switzerland, January 13, 2016 - Egypt's men's team claimed their place at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games following a 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 19-25, 16-14) victory over Tunisia in the African Men's Olympic Qualification Tournament final at Elende Hall in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo on Tuesday.

Egypt join a list of six countries who have qualified for the men's volleyball tournament at the Rio Olympics including hosts Brazil, FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup winners USA and runners-up Italy, South American Olympic Qualification winners Argentina and NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament winners Cuba.

Next up after the tournament in Brazzaville is the African Women' Olympic Qualification Tournament set to take place in Yaoundé, Cameroon from February 12 to 19. That will be followed by the qualification tournament for Asian teams which also doubles as a World Olympic Qualification Tournament and will take place in Japan between May 14 to 22 (Women) and May 28 to June 5 (Men).

The World Olympic Qualification Tournament hosts (Japan) will be joined by the top three ranked teams from Asia according to the FIVB Women’s and Men’s world ranking (Men: Australia, China and Iran / Women: Korea, Thailand, Kazakhstan) as well as the second and third placed teams from the European Olympic Qualification Tournament (Men: France and Poland / Women: Netherlands and Italy), the second placed team from the South American Olympic Qualification Tournament (Men: Venezuela / Women: Peru) and the second placed team from the NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament (Men: Canada / Women: Dominican Republic). The best ranked Asian team and the top three ranked teams from this tournament will qualify for the Olympics. If an Asian team is ranked among the top three, then the next ranked team will be qualified.

The final vacancy will be decided at a second World Olympic Qualification Tournament due to be held in the period from May 14 to June 5, 2016. The third placed team from the South American Olympic Qualification Tournament (Men: Chile / Women: Colombia), the third placed team from the NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament (Men: Mexico / Women: Puerto Rico) and the second and third placed teams from the African Olympic Qualification Tournament (Men: Tunisia and Algeria / Women: TBC) will compete for the final berth available in each gender.
