Mexico edge Algeria 3-2 to pick up first victory

Andrea Rangel spikes against Algeria
Cheraga, Algeria, July 4, 2015 – Mexico picked up their first win in the 2015 FIVB World Grand Prix as they edged Algeria 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 25-14, 21-25, 15-13) in Cheraga on Saturday.

The final set was tense as Mexico strode into a four-point lead at 9-5 only to see Algeria draw level at 12-12. But the Mexicans held their nerve to seal the victory. The result lifts them over Australia into third place in Pool Q. Algeria remain second on three points behind leaders Kenya who are 2-0.

Great defence was the key to Mexico’s win with superior blocking (17-7). They had the edge in aces (8-7) but Algeria were helped by Mexico’s 34 errors, 10 more than the hosts.

Mexico were led by Dulce Carranza with 28 points and Andrea Rangel with 22. Algeria’s top scorer was Safia Boukhima with 21 points.
