Brazilian winning streak now 12-straight victories in The Hague

The Hague, The Netherlands, July 2, 2015 - Ninth-seeded Fernanda Alves and Taiana Lima won their 12-straight match in The Hague here Thursday mid-day as the ninth-seeded Brazilians eliminated eighth-seeded Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernandez of Spain in the first of four mid-day elimination matches at the 2015 FIVB “senior” Beach Volleyball World Championships on the sand of The Hofvijver stadium court, With both teams undefeated in the tournament after winning their pools and opening elimination match, Fernanda and Lima posted a 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) win in 41 minutes over Baquerizo and Liliana. It was the fourth FIVB World Tour meeting between the two teams with series deadlocked now at 2-2. With the victory, Fernanda and Lima will play for a “final four” against top-seeded Madelein Meppelink/Marleen Van Iersel of The Netherlands or 17th-seeded Louise Bawden/Taliqua Clancy of Australia at The Hofvijver stadium court Thursday evening. The Brazilians’ winning streak started last July with seven-straight victories at the FIVB World Tour stop in The Hague where Fernanda and Lima captured the Dutch Grand Slam posting a gold medal win over Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler of Germany on nearby Scheveningen beach. This week’s event is Fernanda and Lima’s 11th FIVB World Tour stop together. The Brazilians will be making their fourth quarter-final appearance in an international tournament. While Fernanda is appearing in her first-ever Beach Volleyball world championships, Lima placed 17th in both the 2011 (Vivian Cunha) and 2013 (Talita Antunes) events.
