Dutch Dandies Delight

The Hague, The Netherlands, July 1, 2015 - It was hot (40° C, 104°F) and the top-seeded team from The Netherlands was even hotter as Madelein Meppelink and Marleen Van Iersel advanced to the next round in the 2015 FIVB "senior" World Championships by posting a 2-0 (21-12, 21-19) win in 38 minutes over Karolina Baran and Jagoda Gruszczynska of Poland here Wednesday.

It was the fourth and final women's elimination match on the sand of The Hofvijver stadium court as the European champions were meeting the 35th-seeded Polish pair for the first-time on the FIVB World Tour.

With the win, Meppelink and Van Iersel will play 17th-seed Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy of Australia in the next elimination round Thursday with the winner advancing to the quarter-finals against a team from either Brazil or Spain.

The Dutch pair is playing in their first-ever world championship together and are currently ranked among the top-10 pairs in the world along with Bawden and Clancy.  While the Aussies have one bronze medal finish to their credit this season (Croatian Major), Meppelink and Van Iersel have three podium placements in 2015, including a silver at the Russian Grand Slam and bronze at the Norwegian Major.

The FIVB World Tour series between the two teams is tied at 2-2 with Meppelink and Van Iersel defeating the Aussies twice this season in Norway, including pool and quarter-final matches.  In Croatian, Bawden and Clancy defeated the Dutch.  The first Aussie win over Meppelink and Van Iersel was last season in The Hague on nearby Scheveningen beach.
