Countdown begins to European Volleyball Gala and Champions League drawing of lots ceremony

The European Volleyball Gala and the Drawing of Lots for the 2016 edition of the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League will be held at the Hofburg in Vienna

Vienna, Austria, June 30, 2015 - The flame of the first, historic European Games was extinguished on Sunday evening in Baku, Azerbaijan, after two weeks of exciting volleyball action at the majestic Crystal Hall came to a close with Germany and Turkey topping the final charts in the men’s and women’s tournaments respectively and Europe’s volleyball family is already looking forward to its next major highlight.

The 2015 edition of the European Volleyball Gala will take place on Thursday night, July 2, and for the second consecutive year it will take place at the magnificent Hofburg, the former imperial residence situated at the very heart of Austria’s capital, Vienna.

All volleyball fans are invited to save the date and to stay tuned as the gala will also include the Drawing of Lots for the League Round of the 2016 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League. A series of awards will also be presented to some of Europe’s most outstanding players.

The gala will start at 20.15 CET and will be broadcast by ORF Sport+, and streamed live on LAOLA1.tv.

The event will also be covered on social media, using the official  #CEVChampionsLeague and #EuropeanVolleyballGala hashtags.

The 28 men’s and 24 women’s teams participating in the 2016 edition of Europe’s flagship club competition will be drawn taking into account the position of their respective National Federations in the latest European Cups Ranking List. As it was already the case last year, teams will be drawn starting from the lowest ranked National Federations plus the teams having received a wild card and then moving up gradually to the top of the ranking. Teams from the same National Federation cannot be assigned to the same pool, with the exception of those having received a wild card or taking over a vacancy left by other National Federations.

The 2016 edition of the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League will get underway on October 27 and November 3 for women and men, respectively. The League Round will come to an end in late January and the season will reach its climax with the Final Four tournaments scheduled for April 9-10 and 16-17 for women and men, respectively.

“I am of course pleased that once again our volleyball family is coming together in Vienna, at the very heart of Europe, and for the second year in a row we can enjoy the marvellous setting and the truly imperial stage of the Hofburg,” CEV President André Meyer said. “We couldn’t ask for a better place to celebrate our sport and its achievements, as well as its stars, and some of them will be on stage on Thursday night as we pay tribute to their outstanding careers and performances and we acknowledge their status as role models for thousands of young boys and girls who are fond of volleyball and are hoping to follow in their footsteps.

“Once again the gala is combined with the Drawing of Lots for the next edition of our flagship competition, the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League, and I know the participating teams can hardly wait to get to know the names of their opponents for the pool phase.”
