Caguas inch closer to women’s title in Puerto Rico

Caguas are close to blanking Mayaguez for a third time in a Puerto Rican Final Series
Caguas, Puerto Rico, May 7, 2015 - Criollas of Caguas have captured a commanding 3-0 lead in a best-of-seven final series with the Mayaguez Indians and are on the verge of winning the Puerto Rican Women’s Volleyball Superior League title.

Caguas swept Mayaguez 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-20) at Héctor Solá Bezares Coliseum on Wednesday. The fourth match of the series is scheduled on Friday in Mayaguez.

The winners totalled 15 blocks, including seven in the first set. They have now scored 48 points via defence at the net in three matches.

The Criollas have an 11-0 win-loss record against the Indians in three final series after blanking the Indians in the finals in 2002 and 2005.

Karina Ocasio led the winners with 14 points while Stephanie Enright and Jessica Jones each contributed 11 points in the victory. McKenzie Adams and Kim Willoughby finished with 14 and 10 points for the losing team.

“Our goal is going to Friday’s match pushing for a victory as visitors,” said Juan Carlos Nuñez, who is chasing a sixth championship ring. “We have played well on the road in our recent matches in the semifinals and the finals, so it is just a matter of keeping the focus and finishing the job.”
