Host City Hotspots: World Press Photo 15

The World Press photo exhibition takes place in Amsterdam from April 8 through to July 5

The Hague, Netherlands, May 7, 2015 - If you are planning a trip to the Netherlands this summer for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, look out for our weekly features on what to do in The Hague, Amsterdam, Apeldoorn and Rotterdam. This week, we take you to the World Press photo exhibition in Amsterdam.

World Press Photo 15
Amsterdam is the perfect place for beach volleyball fans who plan to combine a visit to the Beach Volleyball World Championships with some cultural outings.

Within one hundred meters of the beach stadium on Dam Square, fans will find De Nieuwe Kerk. The World Press Photo 15 exhibition will be held in this magnificent building during the Beach Volleyball World Championships. Amsterdam is the first stop on the international press photography contest's world tour, which will visit 100 cities.

The exhibition features awe-inspiring press photos by 41 prize winners from 17 countries in eight categories: General News, Daily Life, Spot News, Contemporary Issues, Long-Term Projects, Nature, Portraits and Sports. The World Press Photo of the Year is a picture by Mads Nissen of Denmark.

The winning entries in the Multimedia Contest will be presented on large panels and screens in the middle of the exhibition - the Multimedia Contest was established in 2011 in recognition of journalism’s increasing use of moving images and the internet.

Press centre
De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam has been a church since the Middle Ages, but has always been used for a variety of activities. The church building is famous for its exhibitions and is also used for seminars and other ceremonies.

During the World Championships, De Nieuwe Kerk will open its doors to the international media. The monumental church will house the press centre in Amsterdam with work spaces and a press room for interviews and press conferences. De Nieuwe Kerk will also house the competition's organising committee.
