Cayman Islands overcome serious challenge from Suriname

Jessica Wolfenden of Cayman Islands-A helped her country to a close victory over Suriname at Caribbean Zonal Continental Cup of NORCECA on Friday
Ocho Rios, Jamaica, May 1, 2015 – Opening day of the Caribbean Zonal Women’s Beach Volleyball Tournament concluded without surprises as the top-seeded countries prevailed in their respective series at the first-round NORCECA Continental Cup towards the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games at Ocho Rios on Friday.

Playing under sunny skies and hot weather, hosts Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago defeated their opponents in their two matches on Day 1, while the Cayman Islands needed a strong effort from their “A” team to edge a combative Suriname in a close “golden set”.

The local teams of Jamaica scored easy victories over Guadeloupe, Barbados won against Curacao and Trinidad & Tobago beat Haiti.

The Cayman Islands-A team of Jessica Wolfenden and Stefania Gandolfi breezed past Suriname-B of Guenevere Overdiep and Xaviera Willemsberg 2-0 (21-7, 21-8), but Cheryl Brunings and Sandrina Hunsel of Suriname-A tied the series with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) win over Ilean Powery and Chantel Smith-Johnson of Cayman Islands-B.

The golden set that followed was a close encounter between both “A” teams engaged in a battle point after point until a tie at 9-9. Then Wolfenden and Gandolfi used their experience to get a two-point advantage they didn’t relinquish until the final 15-13 score.

Earlier on Friday, Guadeloupe outplayed Aruba, Curacao overcame Martinique, Suriname defeated U.S. Virgin Islands and Haiti downed Bahamas.

The top six ranked teams at the conclusion of the double-elimination event will be granted spots in a second round tournament of the NORCECA qualifiers against the top six teams from the Eastern Caribbean zone.
