Portuguese Cup goes to SL Benfica

SL Benfica defeated SC Espinho to claim the Portuguese Cup
Santo Tirso, Portugal, March 9, 2015 - A three-day event saw Lisbon's SL Benfica claim the 51st edition of the Portuguese Cup. The team from the Portuguese capital defeated Sporting Clube de Espinho to win a record fifteenth title.

A new format was adopted for the 2014/15 edition of the men’s competition, with eight teams from across the country playing at the Santo Tirso Municipal Hall on Friday to qualify for a spot in the semifinals. SL Benfica defeated Vitória SC (3-0), while SC Espinho had to play five sets against Acádemica São Mamede to advance (3-2). Earlier on the same day, AJ Fonte Bastardo edged Famalicense AC (3-0), while Atlântico Madalena obtained the same result against Esmoriz GC (3-0).

The semifinals took place on Saturday afternoon. In a much-anticipated match, SL Benfica took on Elite Division rivals AJ Fonte Bastardo. The team from the Azores, however, were convincingly defeated by Benfica (3-1).

In the second match, SC Espinho reached the final after four thrilling sets against neighbours Atlântico Madalena (3-1), with three of the four sets being decided by a tie-breaker.

The final matched two of the most successful clubs in the history of Portuguese volleyball. Benfica had won the trophy 14 times, while Espinho was an 11-time champion. Benfica defeated Espinho 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-14). Benfica's Hugo Gaspar was the top scorer of the match with 14 points and considered by many the most valuable player of the tournament.
