Gido Vermeulen to head Dutch men's team

Netherlands men's head coach Gido Vermeulen
Nieuwegein, Netherlands, November 28, 2014 - The Netherlands Volleyball Federation has appointed Gido Vermeulen as the new head coach of the men's national team. 50-year-old Vermeulen switches from the women's to the men's team after leading the Dutch women at the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship Italy 2014 and at the 2014 edition of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix.

Vermeulen was appointed coach of the Netherlands' women's team in February 2012 after an earlier stint with the Dutch women as assistant coach from 1994 to 1998. In that time, the team won gold at the 1995 European Championship and came fifth at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

He also coached Spain’s women’s team, whom he mentored to ninth place at the 2009 European Championship, their highest ever finish in the competition. He served as coach of the Netherlands junior men’s team for five years, during which time they took silver at the 2004 European Championship.

Vermeulen's earlier successes with the junior men's team mean he knows the current members of the senior squad well. He has has also served as the head coach of NeVoBo's coaching pool, providing technical leadership within the organisation.

“Almost all our players have worked with Gido in the past and we’ve had great successes under his leadership”, said the experienced Dutch player Jeroen Rauwerdink. “We know him very well and I am confident that we can get the best out of ourselves under his guidance.”

“As I was the coach of the Dutch youth and junior teams, I was able to train the most talented male volleyball players of the Netherlands”, said Gido Vermeulen. “The Dutch men’s team has always kept a special place in my heart. Now I’m appointed head coach, it feels like things have come full circle.”

“With Gido as coach in the last three years, we’ve come really far as a new team”, said Robin de Kruijf, captain of the Dutch women’s team. “We are very grateful to him for that. I wish him every success with the men’s team.”

The Netherlands will play in 2015 FIVB Volleyball World League Group 2 and will begin their campaign with Pool F matches against Belgium, Portugal and Finland. The Netherlands Volleyball Federation is currently searching for a new coach for the women's national team.

World League calendar for Groups 2 and 3 confirmed
