Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico progress to semifinals

Mexico defeated Colombia in Pool A
Cordoba, Mexico, November 27, 2014 - The Dominican Republic clinched the first place in Pool A to progress to the semifinals of the men’s volleyball tournament at the XXII Central American and Caribbean Games.

The Dominican squad beat Trinidad and Tobago in straight sets 3-0 (25-14 , 25-15 , 25-15) with a solid performance by Luis Adames, who tallied 14 points, including three aces. On the Trinidadian side, captain Nolan Tash closed with 9 points. The Dominican Republic worked their service and their blocking game to come out on top (10-1 in blocks and 8-1 in aces).
Puerto Rico 3-0 Cuba
Puerto Rico beat Cuba in the last match of preliminary round Pool B 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 27-25). Hector Soto scored 15 points for Puerto Rico, while Juan Figueroa finished with 14 and Maurice Torres with 13. Javier Jiménez scored 19 points and Osmany Uriarte 13 for Cuba, who surrendered 24 points through errors, while Puerto Rico gave up 27. Puerto Rico finished 8-5 in blocks and 6-4 in aces, including four by Maurice Torres.
Venezuela 3-1 Bahamas
Venezuela defeated a surprising Bahamas team 3-1 (25-12, 21-25, 15-13, 25-17) to improve their win-loss record to 2-1. Kervin Pinerua topped with 15 points, while Emmerson Rodríguez finished with 13 for Venezuela and Fernando Gonzalez and Jesus Chourio registered 10 apiece. Bahamas captain Prince Tanique Wilson was the highest scorer in the match with 17 points, while Byron Ferguson closed with 11 for the Caribbean team, that played with resilience in the second set. Renaldo Knowles aced three times for the Bahamas. Venezuela were superior in services 9-4 (including three aces by Pinerua) and dominated blocks 11-7.
Mexico 3-2 Colombia
Mexico defeated Colombia in the last match in Pool A in five sets 3-2 (27-25, 18-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12). Both teams advanced to the quarterfinals that will be played on Friday.

Humberto Machacon was Colombia’s top scorer with 23 points. Adonis Herrera and Carlos Alomia both scored 10. For the host team, Daniel Vargas tallied 14. Mexico won a very tight first set, while Colombia banked on errors made by the hosts to claim the second. The South American team worked hard with their block in the third. Mexico finished ahead on serves 5-4, but Colombia were superior in blocks 13-9.
