FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Final to offer purse of $500,000

Vicente Araujo, President of the FIVB Beach Volleyball Commission and member of the Board of Administration, presented proposals to the World Congress on Saturday
Cagliari, Italy, November 1, 2014 – An FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Final held annually with the participation of the best eight teams with one money purse of $250,000 per gender, was approved by the 34th FIVB World Congress in Sardinia, Italy on Saturday.

The decision was adopted during the morning session of the second and last day of the biennial assembly of the FIVB. Teams will be selected by the cumulative points earned by athletes at the World Championships, Grand Slam and Open events.

The proposals of the Beach Volleyball Commission were presented by its President Mr. Vicente Araujo, who is also a member of the FIVB Board of Administration.

The Congress also voted in favour of returning the Senior Beach Volleyball World Championships to every two years if the conditions are favorable to organize it, while granting 20 of the 48 qualification spots to the Continental Confederations (four per confederation).

Following the big success of the beach volleyball competitions at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, the FIVB will remit a letter to the IOC requesting its endorsement to permanently include the discipline in the programmes of future editions of this event.

The assembly voted to eliminate the U23 category and to reduce the number of participants in the age group events (U17 and U19 and U21 in 2016) from 36 to 32 teams, while guaranteeing 25 berths to the five continental confederations.

On the other hand, the beach volleyball season, consisting of a Swatch Series, Grand Slams, Opens, WT Finals and other eventual events, will cover two years starting at the end of the 2015 World Tour Final with the 2015-16 campaign.
