Giovanni Malago praises universality and gender parity in volleyball

Cagliari, Italy, October 31, 2014 – The 34th FIVB World Congress opened on Friday in Cagliari with Giovanni Malago, President of the Italian Olympic Committee conveying his high praise for the sport.   

Speaking to delegates of the more than 200 national federations in attendance, Malago commended the “universality and gender parity” in volleyball as well as the advances in the “use of technology in the sport” in his welcome speech at the opening ceremony.  

The ceremony raised the curtain on a Congress that is set to discuss the following issues:

• Global development report overview from last two years.
• National Federation Strategic Report – opportunities and challenges.
• Development of competitions.
• Digital and social media
• Managing innovation and change
• Working with government in schools
• Commercial aspirations and investment for the future

The event was attended by prominent sports officials from the region of Sardinia including Gianmario Demuro, Advisor for General Affairs, who spoke on behalf of the public local authorities. “The whole community is very proud to host the FIVB World Congress,” said Demuro. “Sport is fundamental for the growth, health, integration and solidarity of the people and it is my honour to welcome all of you to our land,” he said.

Carlo Magri, President of the Italian Volleyball Federation also addressed the gathering saying, “This Congress is very special being held immediately after the World Championships in Poland and Italy.”

“Volleyball has arrived at a launching point,” said Magri “And I have to thank Ary Graca, (Cristobal) Marte Hoffiz and (Andre) Meyer for giving Italy the opportunity to host this Congress in Sardinia, a marvellous land. I am always glad to talk about volleyball, a beautiful sport, and I want to congratulate all the people of Sardinia for organising this Congress.”

The 34th FIVB World Congress in Cagliari, Italy opened on Friday following a one day workshop for national federations in categories 1 and 2 on Thursday. The Congress will come to an end on Saturday and live streaming will be available throughout the proceedings.
