Peru win gold medal at U20 Final Four Cup

Peru celebrate their gold medal at the U20 Final Four Cup on Sunday
Lima, Peru, October 20, 2014 – Peru gave their fans a reason to celebrate as their women’s junior national team clinched gold medal in the U20 Women’s Final Four Gatorade Cup with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 17-25, 25-17) victory over Argentina at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum on Sunday. 

Once again Maguilaura Frias led the Peruvian offense with 17 points, followed by Angela Leyva and Coraima Gomez with 13 points apiece. Argentina’s Sol Piccolo finished with 15 points and Camila Hiruela had 14 in the loss.

The winners led in attacks (50-44) and in aces (7-2) with the losers had a slight advantage in the blocking category (9-8). Both teams had the same number of unforced errors with 27 apiece.

Dominican Republic claimed the bronze medal with a straight-sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-16) victory over Cuba on Sunday.

It was the second time the Dominicans had beaten Cuba in the tournament and they took just over an hour to dismantle their Caribbean rivals. The winners had the advantage in attack (40-26) and block (8-5) with the losers edging service winners (7-5).

Massiel Matos (19), Vielka Peralta (12) and Natalia Martinez (10) once again led the offense of the Dominican Republic who finished the event with two victories over Cuba and losses to Peru and Argentina.
