Brazil extend unbeaten run; Germany claim 42nd straight-set triumph

 
Brazil are in peak form after defeating Russia, they have stayed unbeaten since the first round and will be on course to their next goal of a fourth FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship title
 
Lausanne, Switzerland, September 14, 2014 – Brazil won 3-1 over rivals Russia to extend their undefeated run, while Germany got their 42nd straight-set victory when they beat Canada in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship. 

Brazil overcame their second set slip to mark the win-loss board of the Russians with their first defeat in the tournament. This brings them closer and closer to their goal of attaining their fourth consecutive World Championship title. 

Meanwhile, the Germans’ straight sets win over Canada marked the 42nd time that they have won with a match sweep. The victory pulled them up to join Brazil, Russia, Poland, France and Iran in the top six.


Finland break losing spell over Bulgaria – Finland recorded their first ever win over Bulgaria at the World Championship with their straight sets victory. Bulgaria have lost five matches in a row for the first time in the competition. 

Brazil win clash of the undefeated teams – Brazil won their 13th World Championship match in a row with their 3-1 win over Russia. Therefore, Russia’s 11-match winning streak came to an end. 

Argentina end 24-year victory drought against USA – For the first time since 1990, Argentina defeated USA at the World Championship. The victory though was difficult to achieve after it ended in a five-setter. Argentina eliminated the USA in the process after they failed to achieve to get the match in their favour with a 3-0 or 3-1 scoreline. 

Canada last five 3-0 defeats – Canada’s last five defeats a the World Championship since 2010-2014 were all won by a 3-0 scoreline. Germany reached the third round after defeating the Canadians in straight sets. This became their 42nd match that was won in straight sets at the World Championship. This was also their fourth in this current edition. 

Italy end losing streak – Italy have defeated Australia in a four-setter to end their five match losing streak. This will be the first time since the 1986 World Championship that Italy will finish outside of the top six. They finished in 11th place in 1986.
