Zhang Xi - Beach Volleyball’s athlete role model

Olympic medalist and world champion Zhang Xi (center) of China poses with Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Beach Volleyball control committee Marcelo Wangler (left) and FIVB delegate Marco "Tullio" Teixeira.

Nanjing, China, August 22, 2014 - China’s Zhang Xi, who won the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship with partner Xue Chen, is the Athlete Role Model for beach volleyball at the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games.

“I am very honored,” Xi said. “I am looking forward to interacting with the athletes and the volunteers.”

Xi plans on speaking to the athletes about Olympic values, as well as the importance of using sun block.

“We spend a lot of time outside under the sun,” Xi said. “It is important to protect yourself.”

Xi is very popular in China after winning the bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

“The medal was very meaningful for my country,” Xi said.

Xi toured the Nanjing YOG Sports Park on Friday, and posed for many pictures with the Nanjing 2014 volunteers.  She returned for the elimination rounds Sunday and spoke to the center court crowd before the first event match.

“The venue is very good,” Xi said. “It looks very different from the last time I saw it.”

The Youth Olympic Games did not exist when Xi was between the ages of 15 and 18.

“I wish I could have played in the Youth Olympic Games,” Xi said. “It is a very special experience for these players.”

Xi is currently taking a break from beach volleyball to go to law school.
