Europeans lead early women’s elimination Youth Olympic winners Sunday

Nanjing, China, August 24, 2014 - Eight countries, including four European nations, advanced to the Round of 16 on a rainy morning at the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games.

Italy defeated Bolivia to set up a much-anticipated match against Russia in the Round of 16.

“I am not happy with how we played, but I am happy that we will move on,” said Italy’s Irene Enzo.

After two consecutive sunny days with temperatures rising above 30 degrees Celsius, a light rain appeared at the Nanjing YOG Sports Park beach volleyball venue.

“The weather did not affect us,” said Italy’s Michela Lantignotti. “We have trained to play in all conditions.”

The Italians will play against Russia today at 6 p.m. The two teams are very familiar with each other, as Russia Coach Marco Solustri used to coach Italy’s coach, Andrea Raffaeli, when Raffaeli was a player.

The Czech Republic took down Ecuador in a thrilling three-set match. After losing the first set, the Czech Republic bounced back to win the final two close sets.

“We cut down on our mistakes after the first set,” said Czech Republic’s Katerina Valkova.

Czech Republic will play Paraguay today at 8 a.m.

In the only other match to go three sets, Thailand controlled the final set to defeat Chinese Taipei. Thailand will go against Canada tonight at 9 p.m.

Argentina defeated Trinidad and Tobago in straight sets. Argentina will advance to play Turkey today at 6 p.m.

“The win is bittersweet because we could have played better,” said Argentina’s Irene Varasio. “We will improve our attitude in the next match.”

With a loud cheering section supporting them, Team USA took down France. The Americans will next challenge Latvia tonight at 8 a.m.

Switzerland defeated Saint Lucia, and will advance to play Germany tonight at 9 a.m.

Peru took care of Indonesia, and they will take on Brazil, winners of Pool B, tonight at 6 p.m. on center court.

Austria beat Australia to advance to play Uruguay at 7 p.m.
