Turkey add title to Balkan Championship haul

The Turkish U20 men's team celebrates winning the junior Balkan title
Vinica, FYR of Macedonia, August 19, 2014 - Turkey added another gold to its fantastic record in this year’s Balkan Volleyball Association (BVA) Volleyball Championships, ending the season with four of the six possible indoor titles. On Sunday, the young Turks claimed top spot in the Men's Junior Championship, which took place in Vinica. Serbia were defeated 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-12) in the final.

Bulgaria celebrated with the bronze after winning the third place match against Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-17). Greece also needed four sets on Sunday to overpower Romania 3-1 (25-22, 30-28, 15-25, 27-25) for fifth place.  Hosts FYR of Macedonia finished seventh.

The seven participating teams were initially split into two pools, with Bulgaria and Bosnia and Herzegovina claiming the top two places in Pool A and Turkey and Serbia emerging as semifinalists from Pool B. In the first semifinal on Saturday, Serbia beat Bulgaria 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18). In the other, Turkey shut out Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-19).

For the three medal winning teams and Romania, the Balkan Championship was also an opportunity to prepare for the 2014 CEV U20 Volleyball European Championship - Men in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, which will start on August 29.
