Brazil stay on top amid changes in group ranking

Brazilian hitter Jaqueline Carvalho soars high for an attack against USA

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 15, 2014 – Brazil were dazed to overcome a five-setter against USA but eventually prevailed to stay on top of Group 1 standings, while teams had a change up in rankings after the opening day of the fourth week of Intercontinental Round play in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix on Friday.

Brazil recovered after losing the first two sets (29-31, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-10) against USA to keep them on track of earning the first spot in the Final Six. Thaisa Menezes and Sheilla Castro scored 23 points and 20 points respectively to protect their team’s reign in the group.

Meanwhile, Thailand and Russia posted 3-1 home victories over their opponents. Thailand routed Dominican Republic in the four-setter (25-17, 25-23, 20-25, 22-25) in Pool G, while Russia recovered from the loss in the tight first set, to put on a dominating performance in the succeeding three sets (25-27, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18) over Italy to gain their third victory in seven outings.

Japan also improved as they got their second triumph this season defeating European giants Serbia 3-1 (25-17, 10-25, 25-17, 25-19). Yukiko Ebata scored 24 points to fuel the Japanese winning effort in Macau.

China still prevailed despite a 29-point performance by Korea’s Kim Yeon-Koung for a 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-22, 25-19) victory in Macau.

In Pool H, Germany avenged their 3-1 loss to Turkey and built their own 3-1 conquest (20-25, 36-34, 25-20, 25-22) to move up to fourth place in the group standings. Germany cruised to the third and fourth sets after a difficult and long second set.
