Netherlands, Czech Republic climb to top of group standings

Czech Republic celebrate three victories in Pool P

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 27, 2014 – Netherlands and Czech Republic captured leadership in Groups 2 and 3, respectively, after winning all their matches on the opening week of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix on Sunday.

Poland and Bulgaria also topped their respective pools with a clean sweep of the first week of competition.

Netherlands stunned Argentina 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 26-24) and completed the weekend without dropping any sets. Netherlands coach Gido Vermeulen felt good about the positive start in Puerto Rico and was pleased with his team’s performance.

“It was a strong match,” Vermeulen said. “We knew it was going to be so because we face a team from South America. I am pleased with the result because we earned nine points. It was a good Pool for us, we certainly had a good time in Puerto Rico.”

Meanwhile, Czech Republic needed four sets to overcome hosts Kazakhstan (25-16, 26-24, 25-27, 25-16), also completing the week on top of Group 3 and Pool P.

Poland defeated hosts Peru 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20) to place second in the Group 2 standings. Bulgaria showed its strongest performance so far in their 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21) upset of Mexico to land in second place in Group 3 standings.

In other matches, Croatia crushed fellow newcomers Australia in straight sets (25-19, 25-12, 25-17) in Pool P, while Kenya routed African neighbours Algeria 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-13) in Pool Q.

Belgium also posted victory over Canada 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 28-26) in Pool J, while Puerto Rico capped their second victory in their 2014 campaign with a straight sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-17) win over Cuba.

·     Czech Republic surpassed their 2013 win-record of two victories, their 3-0 win-loss slate gives them the positive edge when they return home to Brno to host Pool R.

·     Kenya are more successful among the two African teams in the World Grand Prix this season with two wins in three matches.

·     After a losing debut against Poland, the Yellow Tigers (Belgium) won their next two matches to top Pool J.

·     Bulgarian block figured in their match with Mexico at 16-5 – attacks are equal at 57-all, slim margins in aces 4-3 and turnovers 22-23.

·     The first encounter between Poland and Cuba in the World Grand Prix favoured the former to complete the sweep of Pool J matches.

·     Puerto Rico picked up its second win this season with a straight sets win over Cuba – redeeming their straight sets loss in 2012 to the former World Grand Prix champions.
