Algeria to host Women's U18 and U23 African Nations Championships
Kenya's U23 women's team will be favourites to win the African Nations Championship|
Cairo, Egypt, July 22, 2014 - The African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) has announced that Algeria will host the 2014 Girls' Youth (U18) African Nations Championship and the first ever Women's U23 African Nations Championship from September 5-15, 2014.
The 2014 Girls' Youth (U18) African Nations Championship acts as a qualifier for the 2015 FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship. Players eligible to participate in this competition were born on January 1, 1998 or later. Egypt are the defending champions after defeating Tunisia in the final of the 2013 edition in Cairo.
The new Women's U23 competition will be organised in parallel with the Girls' U18 African Nations Championship. The U23 competition will feature players born on January 1, 1993 or after. The tournament, which is being organised for the first time, follows on from the first edition of the FIVB Volleyball U23 World Championships in Mexico in 2013. Algeria and Kenya were positioned to act as the African representatives at that competition - based on the world ranking - but Algeria withdrew.
The deadline for the African National Federations to register for the U23 African Nations Championships is July 31. The winner and runner-up will represent Africa at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U23 World Championship in 2015.
