Talking Stats: USA join World League’s multiple gold medal club; Italy win back-to-back bronze

USA won their second gold medal, becoming the fourth nation to achieve winning multiple gold medals in the FIVB Volleyball World League

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 20, 2014 – USA secured their second gold medal in the competition and became the fourth nation to earn multiple gold medals, joining a worthy bunch of multiple gold winners Brazil, Italy and Russia in the FIVB Volleyball World League final on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Italy claimed bronze for the second time in a row – a welcome relief since they have not reached the podium in eight straight campaigns prior to 2013.

Statistical Review – Day 5 – World League Finals

- USA win the World League for the second time and for the first time since 2008.

- In the 2008 World League final, they beat opponents Serbia also by a 3-1 scoreline.

- Brazil have amassed a record breaking 18 World League medals – nine gold, five silver and four bronze.

- Brazil have now been losing finalists in three of the last four World League editions.

- Brazil have scored 12 per cent of their total number of points in Florence from blocks, USA have scored 8 per cent of their total points from serves.

- The United States’ Taylor Sander had a 24-point output in the final against Brazil to finish second in scoring.

- Italy now have a total of 15 World League medals – eight gold, three silver, four bronze – exceeding the total medal haul of Russia.

- All four matches of Italy in the Final Six went by 3-0 scorelines – they won three and lost one.

- Italy have won three of their last four World League matches.

- By finishing fourth, Iran became the most successful Asian nation in the World League.

Iranian opposite Amir Ghafour scored only eight points in the bronze medal match but he still topped the scoring charts in the Final Six with 71 points.
