Plamen Konstantinov appointed as head coach of Bulgaria

Plamen Konstantinov has had a short, but quite successful coaching career

Sofia, Bulgaria, July 7, 2014 - Plamen Konstantinov is the new head coach of the men’s national team of Bulgaria as announced at a meeting of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation Board of Administration on Monday.

Italian Camillo Placi's resignation was officially accepted at the meeting and Konstantinov was appointed to lead the Lions in their FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Poland 2014 campaign.

This decision comes the day after Bulgaria’s last game in the FIVB Volleyball World League 2014 and about a week after Placi announced his resignation.  For the two games against Russia, the southern European team was mentored by Placi’s assistant Nayden Naydenov, who was considered as one of the candidates for the head coach vacancy as was former national team head coach Martin Stoev.  However, it was Plamen Konstantinov who gained the unanimous approval of the BFV board.

Konstantinov, a legendary volleyball player in his own right, was the Bulgaria national team captain just four years ago. Following his retirement, Konstantinov made a successful coaching debut with Turkey club Ziraat Bankasi Ankara. He later transferred to the Russian Superliga, where he first coached Gazprom-Yugra Surgut and then, for the past two seasons, Guberniya Nizhniy Novgorod. He led Guberniya Nizhniy Novgorod to a silver medal in the 2014 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men in its debut European Cup season.
