Matosinhos, Portugal, June 26, 2014 -
Portugal is set to host another important international beach volleyball
competition, this time again in Matosinhos a city with a strong tradition in
the sport.
The double-gender Pool A tournament of the first round of the 2014-2016 CEV
Beach Volleyball Continental Cup is scheduled for June 28 and 29 at Marginal
Beach, the same venue which recently hosted the European Qualification
Tournament for the FIVB U17 World Championship. A total of 32 athletes from four different
countries – France, Hungary, Iceland and hosts Portugal – will take to the
courts in the northern coastal city of Portugal, with its excellent playing conditions
and northern hospitality.
The participants’ main goal is to be at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil. In order to achieve that, their national beach
volleyball teams must go through several rounds and then excel in the Final
Round of the CEV Continental Cup, which is scheduled to take place in 2016. All the conditions are in place this
weekend for Matosinhos to host a memorable competition. The hosting traditions
of the northern people of Portugal, their passion for the sport and the
successful recent organisation of international beach volleyball events have
raised the expectations of players, coaches, staff and, of course, beach
volleyball fans.
