Teams in World League Pool G eye Final Four berths

Slovakia coach Flavio Gulinelli, Spain coach Fernando Munoz, Puerto Rico coach David Aleman and China coach Xie Guochen

Kosice, Slovakia, June 12, 2014 – The coaches of the four teams participating in Pool G – China, Puerto Rico, Spain and Slovakia – attended the press conference and expressed their readiness for the second week of competition in the third group of the FIVB Volleyball World League on Thursday.

China currently leads the race to the Final Four, collecting nine points in Carolina, Puerto Rico last week. Slovakia is in second position with four points while Puerto Rico have three points and Spain have two points.

The Final Four is slated to be held from June 28 to 29 in Bursa, Turkey.

China coach Xie Guochen: "I want to thank the organisers in Kosice for all their efforts. We are leading the group after the first weekend but that is only a temporary position and it will not be easy to retain that because all of our opponents are strong teams. We came to Slovakia motivated. We are focusing on the tournament and our goal is to qualify to the Final Four.”

Puerto Rico coach David Aleman: "We have worked very hard in the past two months to prepare well for the FIVB World League. It is a very tough competition and we brought combination of old and young players to give them a chance to gain experience from international matches. We are satisfied with the way we played in the first tournament but I think we can do much better and I hope that we will show that during the second weekend. We are happy to be in Slovakia and our goal is to qualify to the Final Four."

Spain coach Fernando Munoz: "We have arrived here to play our best. I hope that we will show the same motivation that our young team showed last weekend in Puerto Rico. We will try to finish as high as possible and we are ready for our first match against China, which will be very important. I know Kosice and Steel Arena very well because we played here twice and I still have nice memories from 2011 when we played against Slovakia in the Final Four match in the European League. We were close to winning the cup but we eventually lost in the tie-break. I am glad to come back here, everything in Kosice is perfect and we are looking forward to the matches."

Slovakia coach Flavio Gulinelli: "We know each other better after the first week of the tournament so the matches will be tougher and closer. I think the travelling can affect the performance of the players, because it was not easy to move from Puerto Rico and back to Slovakia, but we will do our best. The FIVB World League is a very important competition but we want to give a chance to the young players. We are in second place right now and we will do our best to qualify for the Final Four in Turkey. Everybody came here to win so it will not be easy. Our motivation is high. We are playing at home soil and we want to show our fans good volleyball.”
