Lausanne, Switzerland, May 29, 2014 – Portugal and the Czech Republic will face each other in the FIVB World League on Saturday and Sunday at the Pavilhão Desportivo Municipal of Póvoa de Varzim.

Portugal is taking part in the World League for the 11th time, but for 18-year-old wing spiker João Oliveira, a member of championship-winning team SL Benfica, the World League will be a tough test.

“My initial objective was to reach the national team, but the World League will be an opportunity to show my value,” he said. “I want to work harder and better, and improve myself to gain both the coaches’ and my teammates’ confidence. Due to injuries, I haven’t spent much time with the team, but I’m enjoying the experience.

“We have some changes to our squad, but those who have been called up in place of experienced players will give their best. We only think about winning, but we are aware of the Czechs’ history and strength.

“So, to beat the Czech Republic we’ll need to take advantage of their weaknesses, which are being studied by the staff. We are a hard-working group who are focused on winning matches and showing some great volleyball to our fans. That’s the reason that we have been working hard and we’ll enter the court aiming to give our best and fight for victory.

“Our captain, João José, is my role model, for everything that he represents and what he stands for, and for being a remarkable volleyball player and a great teammate who is always helping others improve, especially young players like me.”
