Starovic relies on support from Serbia’s seventh player – the fans!

Starovic has played 90 matches in World League competition and won silver medals in 2008 and 2009, as well as a bronze in 2010
Belgrade, Serbia, May 28, 2014 - Serbia opposite Sasa Starovic is participating in his eighth season in the FIVB Volleyball World League. Ahead of Serbia's two matches against Russia this weekend, he spoke about his team's ambitions in this year's competition.

Both matches will take place at the Cair Sports Centre in the city of Nis. The first match is scheduled for Friday, May 30 at 20:00 local time, and the second for the following day at the same time.

How do you feel right now, and what do you think about Serbia’s chances in this year’s World League?
I had a rough couple of seasons due to injury, but now I am ready to step up. I think we possess quality and the most important thing is to prepare well for the competition. I believe we can qualify for the Finals. Of course, it won’t be easy, but we can play against all rivals on level terms and I think now it is the right time for us to get back on to the podium in the World League.

Back in 2010 you were four years younger, now there are young guys in the team who are ready to step up. What do you think, how is that influencing the overall team quality?
That is quite normal. Every year we get one or two new players who are trying to make their way into the World League roster. I am not quite as experienced as some other guys, but from my point of view it is a good thing to mix those youngsters with us, who are more experienced, because in that way we are always keeping our team fresh and competitive.

Serbia is playing in the Elite division, and the rivals you face this year are certainly elite. What do you think about them?
It's a very difficult pool. But we have very good players, and as I said, we can play with everybody. I hope that we will reach our goal this year with a bit of luck.

At home, you will be playing in the cities of Nis, Belgrade, and Novi Sad. Do you wish to address the fans in Serbia?
Our fans are our seventh player and they are always creating quite an atmosphere. They help us a lot and it is a great feeling playing for them. Fans in Nis are always coming to cheer for us, the people from Novi Sad as well. Belgrade is used to having big matches, so I am sure that the spectators from the stands will give us wings and support us all the way until the very end.
