Egypt claim gold at CAVB U21 Beach Cup in Mozambique

The medallists at CAVB U21 beach Cup in Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique, May 26, 2014 - Egypt Men's U21 Beach Volleyball team won the gold medal of the 2014 CAVB U21 Beach Cup following their thrilling victory over hosts Mozambique in the competition held at Costa do Sol Beach in Maputo, Mozambique this weekend.

The competition featured three teams playing in a round robin tournament with Egypt meeting hosts Mozambique in the final match.

The Minister of Sport, Mr Fernando Sunbana Jr, had the opportunity to make the first service of the competition, observed by Mr Khalid Cassam, President of the Mozambique Volleyball Federation.

Mozambique v Zimbabwe 2-0 (21-12, 21-15)

Mozambique started with three points down in the first set but quickly recovered with their good service and attacks to win the first set 21-12 and the second 21-15.

Egypt v Zimbabwe 2-0 (21-17, 21-14)

Once again the Zimbabwean team lost 2-0 with Egypt using their experience and power to overcome their opponent.

Egypt v Mozambique 2-1 (21-23, 21-16, 15-7)

Egypt started the match strongly advancing to 8-2 and with the Mozambique team continuing to make errors the score went to 10-3. Egypt continued to play strongly managing to get to 18-12, when the Mozambicans started recovering to  take six consecutive points to equalise the score at 18-18. Egypt won two point taking the score to 20-18 and then Mozambique took a three point lead for the first time ending the first set with a score of 23-21.

The second set started with Mozambique leading with a score of 8-13. As Mozambique started to relax they began making errors that contributed to them losing the second set 21-16.

On the third set, the Mozambique team started nervously and were unable to keep the momentum of the first two sets going. They eventually lost the third set 15-7 and consequently the match against Egypt.
