Italy do double over Brazil in World League opening weekend

Italy celebrate their second straight win over top-ranked Brazil in the World League

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 24, 2014 – Italy finished a memorable opening weekend to the 2014 FIVB World League by doing the double over World No. 1 Brazil in Brazil. USA did the same against Bulgaria while Germany beat Japan in both games on home soil. In Saturday’s final match, Argentina twice took the lead against France in Mendoza but ended up losing the tiebreaker.

In Santa Catarina, Brazil failed to use home advantage as they were once again toppled 3-1 by the Italians, as they had been on Friday. The Italians won 25-17, 24-26, 25-23, 25-20 with Ivan Zaytsev scoring 23 points and Matteo Piano scoring eight blocking points.

“It was a great first week,” Italy captain Emanuelle Birarelli said. “We played without pressure and it is amazing to be able to beat Brazil two times in their home. I am proud of the way that we played. I think that as yesterday our serve was the key for the victory.”

After beating Bulgaria 3-2 in Varna on Friday, USA took their second victory on Saturday, winning 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-17) thanks to 20 points from Matthew Anderson and a 14-6 blocking advantage over their opponents.

After a 3-0 loss to Germany on Friday, Japan put up a fight against Germany in Bamberg, coming back from 2-0 down to force a tiebreaker. But it was to no avail as Germany prevailed 3-2 (25-23, 25-21, 27-29, 23-25, 15-9). Germany’s Christian Fromm and Japan’s Kunihiro Shimizu each scored 28 points in the match.

France got off to a good start in the World League by edging Argentina 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 15-12) in their opening match in Mendoza thanks to 21 points from Antonin Rouzier and some good blocking. However, France failed to score one service point while Argentina had seven. The two teams will go at it again on Sunday night, while in Sunday’s other match Belgium will face Australia in Liege.
