Cubans and Dominicans to square off in Men’s Pool P

Cuba's Leandro Macías spikes over the block of Suriname in Thursday's match at Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum in Havana

Havana, Cuba, May 22, 2014 – Hosts Cuba and Dominican Republic collected their second victories in as many days on Thursday to secure spots in the final match of the NORCECA Men’s World Championship Qualification Tournament Pool P.

The two teams will meet also on Friday in a preview of the gold medal match scheduled on Saturday between the top two teams at the end of the round robin. The winners are granted a ticket to the 24-team FIVB Men’s World Championship in Poland.

The Cuban team used strong serves to outplay Suriname 25-13, 25-9, 25-11 with a huge 10-1 advantage in the aces category and an 8-3 margin in the blocking department.

Osmani Uriarte, 18, led Cuba with 13 points followed by Rolando Cepeda, who collected four aces, and Javier Jimenez with 9 apiece, in the victory.

“They did better than yesterday but still need to show all their potential, something that will be necessary tomorrow against the Dominicans,” Cuba’s coach Rodolfo Sanchez said about the progress of his team.

Suriname’s Coach Jerry Slijngard praised the Cuban team for their performance.

“We know they are a superior team and we did what we thought was necessary,” he said. “Obviously our best was not enough. We have learned a lot, though.”

In the first match of Thursday at Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum, the Dominican Republic swept Barbados 25-13, 25-16, 25-21.

German Recio nailed 13 points, including three blocks and two aces, and José Miguel Cáceres added 10 points in the victory despite playing only in the first two sets of the match.

Veteran Shawn Simpson was the only player of Barbados to reach double figures in scoring with 12 tallies.

“We sent everyone into the court today as a way to prepare the team for the matches against Cuba,” Dominican Republic’s coach José Alvarez Cutiño said.

“I expected better from my team, which failed to adapt to the rhythm of the Dominicans, it felt as if we were going to get them by the third set but we couldn’t”, Barbados’ Coach Ludger Niles stated.
