Puerto Rico and Mexico ready for the challenge in men’s Pool R

Ponce, Puerto Rico, May 23, 2014 – Puerto Rico and Mexico emerge as the favorites to get the only ticket available to the FIVB Men’s World Championship in Poland when the NORCECA Qualification Tournament Third Round Pool R kicks off on Thursday at Juan “Pachín” Vicens Auditorium.

The coaches of both teams seemed confident while expressing their feelings during the press conference held on Wednesday after the conclusion of the General Technical Meeting that precedes the start of the action.

Puerto Rican David Alemán said his players are focused on getting the ticket to the final stage of the tournament in six cities of Poland after going through a strict training program.

“We have put together the best talent available,” Alemán stated. “We have been working for several weeks now and have a clear goal at this tournament.”

On the other hand, Mexico’s Sergio Hernández pronounced his team ready to meet the challenge of winning the ticket at the first chance.

“We played some friendly matches against Cuba and right now we feel ready to battle for the qualification to Poland,” Hernández said. “We have been training for months.”

The teams of Bahamas and Honduras are considered long shots and their coaches sounded content with getting experience while playing sides of higher level.

“We are ready to face the other teams and get the experience in each of the games,” Bahamas’ Raymond Wilson said.

“This is a new experience for my players,” Honduras’ Marcos Tejada stated. “We are very happy to play here.”

The winner in Pool R earns a berth into the 24-team FIVB Men’s World Championship that will be held Aug. 30 to Sept. 21 in six cities in Poland.

The second-place team in Pool R, along with the other three second place teams in third-round pools, will compete in a final playoff July 14-20 to determine NORCECA’s fifth and final spot into the World Championship.
