Men's World Championship on a "good course" as FIVB celebrates 100 days to go
The World Championship will start on August 30 in the capital Warsaw, at the 60,000 capacity National Stadium, a venue more associated with football. However, the match between Poland and Serbia and the tournament opening ceremony that proceeds it has already sold out, a sure sign of how popular the tournament is likely to be.
“Things are well on track and the preparations for the FIVB’s signature event are on a good course,” Dr. Graça said. “All eyes are on the opening match and to have that already sold out just shows how well things are being prepared for the tournament.
“The last time the FIVB held a World Championship match outside was during the second edition of the Men’s World Championship in 1952 in USSR, so it goes to show how unique this event is. With a 60,000 spectator capacity it will go down in history as one of the most memorable World Championship events ever.”
Poland’s fans are among the most committed and vocal on the volleyball circuit. They show their passion to the world whenever the Polish team is in action.
With a tournament that runs from August 30 through to September 21 the expectation is that these fans and supporters from other countries will provide a colourful backdrop to the action on the court.
“The FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championships Poland 2014 is an opportunity not to be lost for the FIVB and Poland,” Dr. Graça added. “Here we have a devoted fan base with the most important event in world volleyball taking place on the soil of one of the most passionate volleyball countries. The combination is both exciting and crucial.
“You will see a level of entertainment and engagement never seen before. We would like to take volleyball into a new era building up towards the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games and the World Championship this year will be our launch pad. The World Championship a fan will experience this year will be like no other - unique and unforgettable.”
With a brand new trophy and unprecedented levels of television coverage taking the sport into more homes around the globe, there is little surprise that this year’s World Championship is already causing ripples of excitement that will continue to grow as August 30 comes into view.
“A successful tournament is where we have record breaking attendance levels, outstanding volleyball which brings entertainment to all that watch and a wonderful lifetime experience which will live long in the memory of all those involved,” Dr. Graça said. “It’s going to be exciting and ground breaking in so many ways. I can’t wait.”
