VTV Cup semifinalists decided

The VTV Cup has attracted large numbers of fans to the Bac Ninh Gymnasium

Bac Ninh, Vietnam, May 21, 2014 - DPR Korea defeated pre-tournament favourites Thailand in four sets and Vietnam powered past Kazakhstan in straight sets on the final day of the single round-robin preliminaries of the VTV International Women's Volleyball Cup.

Thailand suffered a disappointing 3-1 (25-27, 25-20, 16-25, 19-25) loss to DPR Korea, while hosts Vietnam brushed off Kazakhstan in four sets 3-1 (25-9, 25-27, 25-15, 25-17). DPR Korea set up a rematch against Thailand in the semifinals on Friday, while hosts Vietnam prepare for a rematch against Kazakhstan.

Wednesday's third encounter saw China's Yunnan register their first win in the tournament. They defeated Australia in three sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-14).

After five days of preliminaries, Vietnam, DPR Korea and Thailand have earned 12 points. Thailand, DPR Korea, Vietnam and Kazakhstan have made the cut for the semifinals. Despite their victory on Wednesday, China's Yunnan have failed to qualify.

With Thailand, the Koreans and Vietnam collecting 12 points, the points ratios of the three sides were taken into consideration to determine the team rankings and semifinal matches on Friday.

Vietnam have the best points ratio (1.284) and move ahead of the Koreans and Thailand to the top of the standings. DPR Korea (1.225) finished second place overall, with Thailand (1.216) in third.

The semifinals will see the team finishing first take on the team finishing fourth in the preliminary round, while the teams finishing second and third will meet in the other match. The two winning teams will meet in the final showdown and the losers in the third-place playoff.

Thus, Thailand (third place) will take on DPR Korea (second place), while hosts Vietnam and Kazakhstan will play in the second semifinal encounter.

Australia will have a chance to make amends for their loss to China's Yunnan on Wednesday when both sides meet again in the 5th-6th playoff on Friday.

Thursday will be a rest day.
