Guatemala and USA to contest in Men’s Pool O

 
Guatemalans celebrate their second victory and sealed a spot in the finals of Pool O
 
Colorado Springs, United States, May 17, 2014 - Guatemala moved one step closer to an FIVB World Championship spot by defeating St. Lucia 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) on Saturday evening.

Guatemala’s Jeyson Nery and Andy Leonardo contributed 12 points in the victory, while Gerardo Gonzalez and Oscar Garcia added 10 points. St. Lucia was paced by Julian Bissette’s 15 points.

Guatemala’s served proved troublesome for St. Lucia as it produced a 9-3 advantage in aces to compliment a 9-5 block advantage.

Guatemala is now 2-1 with 10 pool standings and earned a spot into Sunday’s NORCECA World Championship Pool O gold-medal final match against the favored United States. The gold-medal winner advances to the 2014 FIVB World Championship taking place in Poland. St. Lucia finished pool play with a 0-3 record.

In the other match, the United States men concluded Pool O Qualification Tournament with a 3-0 record after sweeping Haiti (25-7, 25-10, 25-15) on Saturday evening.

Taylor Sander sparked the U.S. offense with 14 points, including four aces and three blocks. Murphy Troy also scored 14 points in the victory, followed by Russell Holmes with 12 points. Junior Philibert came off the bench to lead Haiti with four points.

The American offense and defense was clicking on all levels with a 33-13 kill margin, 13-1 block advantage and 10-1 service ace margin.
