Al-Rayyan on course to a clean sweep in the preliminaries
Manila, Philippines, April 11, 2014 – Al-Rayyan maintained their momentum in the preliminary round of the PLDT Home Fibr 2014 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Japanese ball club Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler claimed its first win in Pool B, beating Vietnam’s Duc Long Gia Lai in four sets (25-22, 22-25, 26-24, 25-21). Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler felt a sense of relief after they escaped Duc Long Gia Lai’s difficult challenge.
"It has been three days of intense competition. We played a very good team, and it was a challenge," said Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler coach Hiroyuki Furuta through an interpreter.
"We committed a lot of mistakes, particularly on our reception, that's why we struggled on some parts, but we made adjustments towards the end and recovered easily," he added.
Meanwhile, in Cuneta Astrodome, Turkmenistan’s Migrasiya cruised to its second straight victory after a 0-2 start in Pool C. Migrasiya clinched a 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 26-28, 25-23) win over the spirited Hong Kong side, Green Dragon.
Dawut Nuryyev fired 19 points and Merdan Azimov scored 16, the last on a game-clinching kill after Hong Kong staved off match point thrice.
Turkmenistan, which picked up its second straight triumph after a 0-2 start, overcame the stellar efforts of Hong Kong's Siu Cheong Hung (26 points) and Chan Alex Chi Wai (20 points).
A Gylychdurdyyev smash pushed Turkmenistan within a point of a win, 24-20, before Hong Kong rattled off three straight points from a pair of Chan hits and a Siu block.
Tough Qatari squad Al-Rayyan drubbed Oman's Sohar in straight sets (25-19, 25-23, 25-14) to stay unbeaten in Pool C. Al-Rayyan rode on the double-digit efforts of Mohamed Alhachdadi, who topscored with 15 points, Cristian Savani contributed 14 points, and Cala Gerardo Yosleyder with 12 points to cruise to a third straight triumph.
Alhachdadi, Savani and Yosleyder delivered almost all of Al-Rayyan's attacks as the standout trio accounted for 39 of the team's 47 total.
Al-Rayyan also drew quick points off Sohar's errors with 23 in the match it controlled virtually all the way.
Sohar absorbed its second straight setback to drop to a 1-2 win-loss record.
Chinese Taipei stunned Alnasr Sports Club in four sets (19-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-23) in Pool D. Chinese Taipei had a slow start allowing Alnasr Sports Club to steal the first set but Huang Chien-Feng churned out another explosive performance to power Chinese Taipei past United Arab Emirates' Alnasr Sports Club.
Huang scattered 21 kills, four blocks and a service ace for a match-high 26 points as Chinese Taipei clinched its second triumph in three games in Pool D. Chen Chien-Chen scored 10 and Wang Ming-Chun added nine markers to help Chinese Taipei recover from a set down.
Alnasr Sports Club, which fell to a 1-2 win-loss slate, had Srecko Ristic and Mohamed Chikhi leading with a combined 24 points.
