Coaches course and national volleyball championship in Solomon Islands postponed
Honiara, Solomon Islands, April 7, 2014 – The VCP Level 1 Coaches Course and the Solomon Islands Volleyball National Championship has been postponed to July, following devastating flash floods in the Solomon Islands have killed at least 19 people.
While 40 people are still missing an estimated 49,000 people are homeless. Water supplies and infrastructure including sewerage, electricity and have also been damaged, Reuters reported.
Entire riverside communities and bridges were washed away when the Matanikau river in Honiara broke its banks on Thursday. The government has declared a state of emergency.
The VCP Level 1 Coaches Course was scheduled to be held from April 14 to 21.
The decision to postponed the course and the national championship was taken by the Solomon Islands volleyball Federation Executive board on Monday.
The Federation has urged teams taking part in the Volleyball National Championship to continue with their training until July.
