Fortaleza Grand Slam postponed, further beach volleyball calendar changes announced

The 2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour will begin with the Fuzhou Open in China, which will take place from April 22 to 27.

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 19, 2014 – The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has announced the postponement of the Fortaleza Grand Slam to later on in the year in a series of changes made to the 2014 Beach Volleyball Calendar on Wednesday.

The Fortaleza Grand Slam, originally scheduled to take place from May 13 to 18, will be held later on in the year following a request from the Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV). The tournament in Fortaleza was scheduled to take place a few weeks after the opening Grand Slam event of the season in Shanghai (April 29 to May 4), which will now be followed by the Moscow Grand Slam from June 11 to 15.

The FIVB also announced the recent opening of the bid process for this year’s FIVB World Tour Grand Slam Final, which will determine the date (after the last Grand Slam of the season), location and organiser for this inaugural tournament.

Following confirmation from the Volleyball Federation of Mexico, the inaugural FIVB Beach Volleyball U17 World Championships will now be held in Acapulco, Mexico from July 15 to 20 instead of Bahia de Banderas as initially announced. Acapulco has hosted three double-gender FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Open events in 1999, 2005 and 2006. This will be the first age-group FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship that Mexico will hold.

The duration of the FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championship in Larnaca (Cyprus) and the FIVB Phuket Open have been changed with the former scheduled to place from July 23 to 27 (instead of July 22 to 27) and the latter from October 15 to 19 (originally October 14 to 19).

Earlier in the month the organisers of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Transavia Grand Slam in the Netherlands, which is due to take place from July 16 to 20, confirmed that it will be played in four cities – Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Apeldoorn and The Hague – as a test looking ahead to the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, which the Netherlands will host in 2015.
