FIVB World Ranking champs off to winning start at South American Games

FIVB world ranking champions Lima (left) and Talita enjoyed a successful start to the South American Games
Santiago, Chile, March 13, 2014 – FIVB Women’s World Ranking title holders Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima led the way as Brazil’s four teams at the South American Games all made winning starts.

All four teams won without dropping a set and Talita and Lima started with a 2-0 (21-6, 21-6) victory over Colombia’s Erica Zuluaga  and Cindy Penaloza.

The win was their 100th as a partnership since they joined together at the start of 2013 and shows that they are in good form just over a month before they begin the defence of their title.

The other women’s team of FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships bronze medallists Liliane Maestrini and FIVB U19 world champion Eduarda ‘Duda’ Santos Lisboa also began the Games in winning style, with a 2-0 (21-9, 21-8) win against Chile’s Maria Josefina Velez and Pilar Mardones.

In the men’s competition Brazil’s Emanuel Rego will remember his debut at the tournament after he and Pedro Salgado were pushed hard by Argentina’s number one duo Pablo Bianchi and Facundo Del Coto, a team they know well from the South American circuit.

Despite having to fight hard to control the match at times Emanuel and Pedro’s quality shone through at tight moments and they finished with a 2-0 (21-14, 23-21) victory.

Emanuel’s former partner Allison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt completed the winning start for Brazil when they beat Chilean duo Cristobal Martinez and Rodrigo Salinas, 2-0 (21-9, 21-15).

The South American Games are currently taking place in Santiago, Chile from March 7-18, with the beach volleyball competition running from March 12-15.
