VolleyWorld takes a global view of volleyball and beach volleyball in 2014

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 10, 2014 – As we head into another action packed volleyball and beach volleyball season, VolleyWorld previews what’s in store for the coming months.

This issue takes a closer look at the success of an unlikely combination of beach volleyball at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, before looking ahead to what will be the sport’s busiest year yet.

On the volleyball front, players and fans are preparing for the sport’s most anticipated tournament of the season – the FIVB Volleyball World Championships – which will see the world’s best teams play against each other for the coveted title of ‘World Champion’.

But before that the FIVB World League and FIVB World Grand Prix will see 28 teams, the largest number of participants in these tournaments to date, compete for the top prize. With more teams, comes more competition and Russia’s men and Brazil’s women will have their work cut out for them as they try to hold on to their respective World League and World Grand Prix titles this year.

With a record $10.2m in prize money, 10 Grand Slams, an inaugural FIVB Grand Slam Final, 11 Open tournaments and four age-group tournaments, which include the inaugural U17 Beach Volleyball World Championship, beach volleyball is looking at one of its busiest year’s yet. Tried and tested partnerships will play against newer ones on beach volleyball courts on all five continents this year.
