AVC Qualification Tournament for Youth Olympic Games to be held in Thailand

The beach volleyball tournament of the second Youth Olympic Games will be held in Nanjing from 17 to 27 August 2014

Beijing, China, March 6, 2014 - The Thailand Volleyball Association has confirmed that the AVC Beach Volleyball Qualification Tournament for the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games will be held at Khanom Beach, Thailand from April 4 to 6.

The competition format will be country versus country with each country represented by one team per gender. The final format will be based on the number of teams registered for the tournament. The qualification tournament is scheduled to be played in two phases, i.e. preliminary round robin phase and the second phase of single elimination with classification.

Entry forms are available online and in hard copy and the deadline for submissions is March 25, 2014. China, as the host country of the second edition of the Youth Olympic Games, is not eligible to participate in the AVC Qualification tournament.

The six top ranked countries per gender will compete in the second Youth Olympic Games scheduled to take place in Nanjing, China from August 17 to 27. Once the participating countries are determined they can enter any players who comply with the provision of the Olympic Charter currently in force, as well as the IOC and FIVB related regulations.

Beach volleyball was supported by the FIVB and approved by the IOC as the only volleyball discipline to be included in the second Youth Olympic Games in order to cover as many countries as possible. A total of 36 men’s and 36 women’s teams will participate in the beach volleyball tournament, which will be held at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park Complex stadium.  There will be eight competition days and three rest days when the cultural and educational programmes and the Sports Initiation Programmes will be carried out.
