New Zealand Secondary Schools Beach Champs comes to a successful end

The Secondary Schools Beach Championships have become a huge event in New Zealand

Auckland, New Zealand, February 12, 2014 – The 2014 Secondary Schools Beach Volleyball Championships was held over the weekend in Auckland with 143 teams participating.

The winners in the junior girls’ category, Emily Johnston and Ruby Marsters of Bethlehem College held out silver medalists Grace Burnett and Brooke Ryan-Bidois, Otumoetai College.

The exciting finals were played in front of vocal crowds who filled the centre court. The senior boys’ competition saw Tauranga Boys retain the title, with Caleb Apeharama and Thomas Reid defeated last year’s silver medallists Jack Boyle with his new partner Will Clague from Otumoetai College in two close sets.

The senior girls’ final featured Burnside High School (Christchurch) for the first time, with an impressive young team of Nicky Pio (Year 12) and Alice Zeimann (Year 11) facing off against Orewa College's Renee Ursem and Claudia Coghlan. This was another close final with both teams serving tough and swinging hard. The defence of Claudia was outstanding, picking up power hits from Alice without flinching. In the end Pio / Zeimann took the match 2-0 and continued the rise of South Island beach volleyball.

The junior boys’ final was played between two schools developing a great rivalry on the beach, Westlake Boys High School and Tauranga Boys College. Greg Vukets and Greg Nimmo (Westlake) took on Daniel Kilpatrick and Luke Carter. Vukets/ Nimmo who were part of the team that won the North Island Junior Secondary Schools Indoor title were again out for gold and the Tauranga Boys were unable to stop them.
