Guaynabo Mets win men’s title in Puerto Rico

Guanabo's players celebrate after their five-set victory over Arrecibo to claim the title of the Puerto Rican Men's Volleyball Superior League

Arecibo, Puerto Rico, February 5, 2014 – The Guaynabo Mets swept Arecibo Captains in the Great Kia Final Series of the Puerto Rican Men’s Superior League winning 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 26-24, 24-26, 15-12) on Tuesday to claim their fourth consecutive victory.

It is the first crown for the Guaynabo franchise in 38 years.

Pablo Guzman, named the Most Valuable Player of the Final Series, topped the new champions with 30 points, followed by Jackson Rivera with 21. Enrique Escalante and Jean Carlos Ortiz contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, in the victory.

Nestor Bracero was the best scorer of the defeated side with 19 points. Hector Soto had 16 while Luis Rodriguez and Victor Rivera added 14 and 11, respectively.

“This is a very special title,” Guaynabo’s setter and captain Angel Perez said. “I came in here five years ago and worked very hard for this victory.

“The experience helped us,” Perez added. “Maybe last year we were just satisfied with being in the finals, but now the work is done. It was a team effort and we reached our goal.”

Guzman, who scored 85 points in the four matches, was elated after the historic victory.

“I don’t have enough words, I am super happy,” he said. “Thanks to Javier (coach Gaspar), to my teammates and my family. I am so thankful for this achievement. We worked very hard.”
