Warsaw begins countdown to Drawing of Lots ceremony

The FIVB Volleyball World Championships are a quadrennial event. In the men’s competition, Brazil will be looking to add a fourth consecutive win to their hat-trick of back-to-back titles in 2002, 2006 and 2010.

Lausanne, Switzerland, January 27, 2014 – Poland’s city of Warsaw is counting down the hours to Drawing of Lots for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Poland 2014, scheduled to begin at 19:00 on Monday evening at the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw.

The Drawing of Lots will determine the make-up of the pools in the first round of this year’s tournament, which will take place from August 30 to September 21 across the following six Polish cities: Katowice, Lodz, Wroclaw, Gdansk, Bydgoszcz and Krakow.

The Drawing of Lots ceremony will be carried out in the presence of FIVB President Dr. Ary. S. Graça and Poland’s Minister of Sport and Tourism, Andrzej Biernat under the supervision of the Master of Ceremony. On Sunday, it was confirmed that Volleyball Player of the Century, Italy’s Lorenzo Bernardi will be one of three major stars who will step on stage on Monday in Warsaw to draw the teams participating in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Poland 2014.

In addition to the Drawing of Lots and announcement of the host cities, highlights include the unveiling of the World Championship trophy and full details of the opening ceremony and match that will launch the most anticipated event of the 2014 volleyball season.

The ceremony will be broadcast in Poland by Polsat Sport from 19:00 to 20:30 (UTC/GMT +1 hour) and will be live streamed on www.fivb.org. The trophy will be on display for members of the media following the ceremony.

To date 16 out of 24 teams have qualified for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship following the completion of the European round of qualifications in early January 3 to 5, with only the African Confederation (three vacancies) and NORCECA (five vacancies) still to complete their qualification process for the World Championship tournament.

On the African continent, qualification tournaments will be held in Kenya (February 5 to 11), Cameroon (February 12 to 18) and Tunisia (March 2 to 8) each featuring five teams with one ticket per tournament on offer to Poland.

The NORCECA confederation will hold four qualifying tournaments (each with four teams) scheduled to take place in Cuba (May 12 to 18), USA (May 13 to 19), Canada (May 14 to 20) and Puerto Rico (May 20 to 26). The FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Poland 2014 NORCECA playoff will take place either in Mexico or Puerto Rico from July 14 to 20 and will determine the last of the five NORCECA teams to book their place at the World Championships this year.

The men’s tournament will be followed by the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Italy 2014, which will take place from September 23 to October 12.
