Ricardo and Marcio roll back the years to win in Sao Luis

Sao Luis, Brazil, January 20, 2014 – Ricardo Santos and Marcio Araujo continued their impressive run in the Banco do Brasil Beach Volleyball Tour by winning in Sao Luis, a result that puts them top of the rankings.

The pair who won silver together at the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships came from behind to defeat Fernadao and Rodrigo Saunders 2-1 (19-21, 21-12, 15-7) and go top of the standings with 1,960 points.

“We’ve managed to open up a good distance for the other pairs, but what makes me happier is that we are still improving,” Ricardo said. “It is great to have won here as we’ve not always been at our best at times this season and that has cost us podium places.”

Ricardo and Marcio are two of the most decorated players on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. Ricardo has a full set of medals from FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships and Olympic Games, while Marcio won Olympic silver at Beijing 2008.

In 2013 Ricardo won World Championships silver, Gstaad Grand Slam gold and bronzes at the Shanghai and Moscow Grand Slams and while Marcio missed the entire season the pair are both aiming to be competitive in the 2014 World Tour that starts with the Fuzhou Open in China from April 22-27.

“Ricardo and I focused on our roles,” Marcio said. “He has great experience in blocking, whereas I’m no expert in defence, so technically we form a great team. Then we had to be patient. In the semifinals there were times when we could have lost our cool, but we stayed focused and worked together.”

For silver medallists Fernandao and Rodrigo Saunders it was the first time they finished on the podium and they were joined by another team winning their first medals of the season, Thiago and Oscar who beat Bruno Schmidt and Hevaldo 2-0 (21-17, 21-14).
