Jayyous Club takes Palestine tournament

Sinjel are currently second in the Palestine Premier League with 24 points
Ramallah, Palestine, January 10, 2013 – Palestine’s volleyball fans had the chance to watch their country’s two leading clubs in action on Friday in a match which saw West Bank club Jayyous secure the top spot in the local tournament.

Jayyous won against fellow West Bank club Sinjel 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-12) in Friday’s match, which was streamed over the internet and shown locally on the Palestine Live station. The match also received a great deal of coverage in local newspapers. Almost 1000 fans attended the match and the General Secretary of the Palestine Olympic Committee, Dr Mazen Khatib was also in attendance.

The pair currently occupy the top two spots in the Premier League, with Jayyous in first place with 27 points, three points head of Sinjel. The team that head to the Arab Club Championships in Tunisia will be nominated over the next ten days, when the top four teams in the current rankings (Jayyous, Sinjel, Azoun, Al Nazleh Al Sharqeieh) with take part in a final tournament. The team with the highest number of points will earn their place at the regional club championships.

Jayyous were formed in 1969, while Sinjel came into existence six years later and they have dominated Palestinian volleyball ever since and produced a string of players for the national team. In 2012 Jayyous won the Premier League, with Sinjel narrowly behind.

With the FIVB's support, the Palestine Volleyball Federation has set out some ambitious plans, which includes putting the country on the international volleyball map. Previous events in Palestine have included the Volley All Festival, which saw thousands of young people get together to play volleyball in the cities, public parks or other locations used by the local community.

Earlier in the year, a course for coaches brought together 20 participants with the objective of supporting the volleyball community in Palestine.
