Germany win pair of five-setters against Belgium ahead of World C'ship qualifiers

Germany won both warm-up matches against Belgium but were pushed to five sets each time
Zoersel, Belgium, December 30, 2013 – Only 24 hours after their first clash in Maaseik, Germany and Belgium met once more in Zoersel for a second friendly match in preparation for this weekend’s World Championship qualifiers.

Germany again had the upper hand in another five-setter (26-28, 28-26, 14-25, 25-17, 15-10) with Christian Fromm scoring 25 points, while opposite Georg Grozer contributed 19. Middle-blocker Michael Andrei, who made his international debut with the German national team on Sunday, also left a very good impression, registering 10 points, including five blocks.

In the first match, Germany also won 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 16-25, 30-28, 15-13).

“It was not that easy because once again I wanted to test many players, but they all responded well” said Germany’s head coach Vital Heynen after the second game. “Now I hope that we are ready for the World Championship qualifiers in Ludwigsburg.”

Germany will play Croatia, Estonia and Turkey January 3-5 for a spot in the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championships.
