Uganda complete 2013 beach volleyball season

The gold medalists at the eight edition of the Uganda National beach volleyball tour

Entebbe, Uganda, December 2, 2013 - About five weeks ago Uganda held the last leg of its national beach volleyball tour, using the local event to select its national squad for the recently hosted Castle Lite International Championship at Lido Beach Entebbe.

A total of 42 men and 62 women took part in the national tour comprising six distinct events spread across the year.  Uganda also sent teams to the Borabora International in Burundi in February as well as the third Islamic Solidarity Games in Indonesia. The players now take a two month break prior to the start of the 2014 season.

Seasoned stars Dickens Otim and Ambrose Okello topped the men’s ranking while Diana Agaba Tukundane concluded the year at helm in the women’s category.

Meanwhile Team Uganda’s top seeds achieved a significant medal haul on the 17th of November when they joined fellow East Africans from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda at Lido Beach on the shores of Lake Victoria in the two day regional derby. The championship, now in its eighth year, is popular among budding regional beach volleyball players who are determined to feature on the world scene in the near future.

Uganda hauled in five medals which included gold in the men’s category, two silvers and two bronzes missing out on only the ladies gold that Kenya’s Ednah Rotich with partner Yelena Juma ensured went no other place.

A total of 20 teams took part sharing out cash and accolades sponsored by Castle Lite and Rwenzori Mineral Water. The prize ceremony was attended by Uganda Volleyball Federation President Sadik Nasiwu and sponsor representative Steven Kalema. The ninth edition is already set for December 6 and 7, 2014 in Entebbe, Uganda.
