World Tour Council meets in Lausanne

FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° opens the World Tour Council

Lausanne, Switzerland, November 30, 2013 – The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Council completed its annual meeting at the FIVB head office in Lausanne, Switzerland on Saturday.

The FIVB President Dr. Ary Graça F° opened the meeting, which featured the promoters of the FIVB World Tour events, by stressing how far beach volleyball has come to its successful position today and what the exciting future holds.

“Beach volleyball is very important. In 1988 we started with the first World Championship in 1998 in Brazil. We did it every year until 1993, when the-then IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch visited and was so impressed, beach volleyball was accepted into the Olympic Games in 1996.

“Since then beach volleyball has been a huge success in Sydney and Beijing with London being considered the best event at the 2012 Games.

“You are all aware of this and we are working step by step to take beach volleyball to another level. I trust absolutely in your work.

“When I started as Beach Volleyball Commission President in 2008 the goal was to spread beach volleyball around the world and that has been achieved through the World Tour and the Continental Cup. Now we have a true discipline. Now beach volleyball has grown around the world and we are aiming to create a new market for our sport.”

The proposals from the World Tour Council - which is presided by FIVB Executive Board Member in charge of Beach Volleyball Vicente Araujo - including the calendar for 2014, will be put forward to the FIVB Executive Committee, which meets in Lausanne on December 15.

The next FIVB meeting is the FIVB World League Council on Sunday.
