Agatha and Barbara reign supreme in Guaruja

Barbara (left) and Agatha topped the Brazil Tour podium for the first time in 2013
Guaruja, Brazil, November 17, 2013 – Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas won their first gold medals on the Banco do Brasil Tour with victory over Juliana Felisberta and Maria Antonelli in the final in Guaruja.

Despite rain and wind Agatha and Barbara maintained their form to win 2-0 (21-18, 21-17) to add the Guaruja golds to the bronze medals they won in Vitoria and Rio de Janeiro.

“We’ve had so many obstacles during the year that the rain did not disturb us at this time,” Barbara said. “When we woke up we told each other it was beautiful weather and woud suit us because that was the only way to overcome it.

“We had the right motivation to play well and it was good to close out the tournament with a flourish, having won all our matches 2-0, so that shows that it was a job well done.”

It is the second time that Agatha has finished on the podium in Guaruja having won silver in 2011. She was also voted player of the tournament for her performances on the way to winning gold this year.

“We woke up focused and knew exactly what we needed to do have a chance of winning,” she said. “We knew that Juliana comes from nearby and had lots of friends and family in the crowd, but we focused on the things we could control and that allowed us to play well.”

Liliane Maestrini and Rebecca Silva finished third and so extended their lead at the top of the rankings with a 2-1 (21-14, 17-21, 15-13) win over Eliza Maia and Fernanda Berti.

They currently have 1,360 points; Agatha and Barbara are second on 1,320, while Juliana and Maria Antonelli are tied with Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima in third with 1,280.
