Success marks the Guyana Mini-Volleyball Festival
Berbice, Guyana, November 14, 2013 – A mini-volleyball festival was recently organised by the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) in Guyana for children aged 9 to 13.
The festival was held in Port Mourant and conducted by BVA treasurer, Godwyn Allicock, who was ably assisted by national U19 players, Vashti Pooran, Darshnie Pooran and Devendra Motiepersaud.
The participants, who came from schools in the local area, received instruction on the history of volleyball, the role of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the aim of mini-volleyball festivals. They were also given an overview of the work of the Berbice Volleyball Association and the Guyana Volleyball Federation and introduced to basic volleyball drills with an emphasis on the ‘overhead finger pass’.
With the weather on their side, the participants had the opportunity to put into practice what they had learnt on the courts and at the conclusion of the festival, students and teachers all expressed their joy and satisfaction in being involved in the event. They further said they are willing to learn more and plan to organise practice sessions after school so that teachers and students can hone their skills to participate in friendly competition among themselves.
The festival coordinator Godwyn Allicock said he was happy and overwhelmed with the level of interest and enthusiasm displayed by the students and their teachers. He also expressed his thanks to the Regional Education Officer, all the head teachers of the invited schools, the teachers that accompanied the students, the Rose Hall Town Interim Town Council, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports club, the Port Mourant Training Centre, the Presidents of the BVA and the GVF, the Ministry of Education Allied Arts Department and the FIVB. He also promised that the BVA would continue to monitor the game in local schools.
All participating schools received two children’s volleyballs and an FIVB Development Net.
